Polar bears are the indelible symbol of the climate change religion. It did not happen by accident. The photographer (Cristina Mettermeir) who took the now-iconic photo of a scrawny polar bear on an ice floe was looking for a compelling symbol to illustrate the effects of global warming. She zeroed in on a gaunt polar bear scavenging for food on a desolate landscape. She succeeded far beyond what she could have imagined.

Her photo was printed in National Geographic with the caption: “This is what climate change looks like.” The magazine wrote that melting sea ice, caused by warming, was responsible for starving polar bears. It was viewed by 2.5 billion people (the most ever) on the magazine’s website and had its intended effect, i.e. horror and a public outcry demanding action. The photographer later admitted there was no evidence the bear was gaunt due to climate change. National Geographic also walked back the story.

Far from being threatened, polar bears are thriving and resurgent

This one iconic image of a gaunt polar bear did more to energize the climate alarmist movement than any scientific report before or since. Much of the mainstream media and large segments of the public continue to believe the myth of near-extinct, starving polar bears adrift on arctic ice floes. Climate alarmist scientists predicted 67% of polar bears would disappear due to warming. The numbers paint a far different picture.

Recent studies place the polar bear population at more than 30,000. This is up from 5,000 in 1950 and 8,000 in the 1960s and 1970s. The polar bear population is up 600% from the 1950s and up nearly 400% from the period 1960-1980. These data come from the Polar Bear Specialist Group within the International Union for the Conservation of Nature – a progressive international body. You can easily check this out online.

It is beyond debate that polar bears, far from being threatened, are thriving. However, there are lessons that go beyond resurgent polar bears. The climate alarmist religion is shown to be founded on junk science, scare tactics and lies. Science has become hyper politicized and is no longer credible. Corrupt fact checkers refuse to verify the polar bear population even though it is from an esteemed body of environmental scientists. Climate alarmists follow the science only when they believe it supports their cause.

Polar bear propaganda is just the tip of the iceberg – pun intended. Climate alarmists promoted the polar bear myth as proof positive of manmade warming. Now that polar bears have gotten their revenge, will climate alarmists accept they are wrong?

Consistent with our libertarian bent, MLLG favors legalization of most drugs including marijuana. But we also favor legalization for a slew of practical reasons including:

  1. Enhanced product safety
  2. Regulation and disclosure of dosage
  3. Lowering the cost
  4. Quit enriching criminal drug cartels
  5. Remove economic incentives for illicit distribution
  6. Eliminate turf wars and resultant mayhem
  7. Increase respect for the law
  8. End drug-related corruption of police and judges
  9. Stop drug dealers from becoming role models
  10. Reduce corruption of entire narco states
  11. Focus US foreign policy away from drug issues

Currently 21 states have legalized marijuana, although it remains illegal under federal law. Instead of making things better, such as by accomplishing the benefits listed above, legalization has failed to solve any of those problems and has created new ones, an outcome we hitherto believed impossible. We now have the worst of both worlds!

No state has gotten legalization right, but New York, California and Colorado have made the biggest hash of it. Unlike alcohol and tobacco, states have taxed and regulated marijuana so heavily that the illegal traffic has not subsided and actually has been enhanced. Instead of being put out of business, black markets are thriving.

Biden wants to impose a new 25% federal tax and hyperregulation.

The craziness is legion. New York is giving preference for obtaining a license to former drug dealers and convicted felons under the wacky theory their experience better equips them for the now-legal market. California taxes and regulates marijuana so heavily it can’t compete with the black market, which is on steroids. Turf wars have expanded to include violence over access to water. It is so bad some of the largest legal pot operators are pulling out of California, Oregon and Colorado. Thousands of legal marijuana shops in California are closing due to state taxes of up to 80%.

To top off the pot craziness, the Biden administration is proposing a 163-page bill imposing an additional 25% federal tax and horse-choking new federal regulations.

This year’s Christmas posting is about the innkeeper in whose manger Jesus was born. Last year (posting dated 12/5/21) was about Ebeneezer Scrooge; in 2020 (12/13/20) it was about Christmas Eve 1941 following Pearl Harbor. The story of the birth of Jesus lies at the heart of Christmas. One prevalent narrative is that Jesus was born in a manger because the innkeeper raised prices due to the surge of visitors for the census. The innkeeper often is portrayed as a greedy, and even evil, capitalist. But was the innkeeper truly greedy? The following is from Luke 2-7.

“Caesar Augustus decreed a census be taken and everyone go to their town

to register. . . So, Joseph and Mary, who was with child, went to Bethlehem.

While there, Mary gave birth in a manger as there was no room at the inn.”

The Grinch Who Stole the First Christmas

The Roman government forced people to travel long distances at their own expense and at great risk to register for the census – for the purpose of taxation. Caesar knew there would be great danger and hardship but was oblivious. Conducting a census, even 2,022 years ago, could have been accomplished with much less human misery.

Why was it necessary to require travel? Why couldn’t people register where they lived? The Romans had a vaunted postal system that could have facilitated the census without hardship. Clearly, this was an egregious abuse of power. The hubris of government was responsible for Jesus being born in a manger instead of in his own home. It is incandescently clear that the grinch who stole the first Christmas was government.

Was the Innkeeper Greedy or Benevolent?

If the innkeeper raised prices due to the surge of travelers registering for the census, would that have been greedy or even evil? This situation is no different than the price of hotel rooms during a hurricane or a big football game. Prices convey valuable economic information. By adjusting prices when demand surges, consumers benefit.

Higher prices incentivize travelers to stay with friends or relatives or to lodge farther away where prices are lower. Some families that otherwise might have taken two rooms may decide to make do with one room. Some people may decide to stay for fewer nights. Higher prices would sharply increase the supply of rooms as many local residents may decide to rent out rooms in their home, or even their entire home.

The price mechanism assures more people will get more rooms than if prices remained static. Scarce hotel (or inn) rooms are allocated in the most economically efficient manner. Those who value rooms the most get them. Far from being evil, higher prices enable the market to allocate scarce resources to the benefit of all consumers.

The narrative of a greedy innkeeper is frequently the topic of Christmas sermons and school plays. It is economic ignorance and anti-capitalist drivel. The grinch who stole the first Christmas was government – and nothing has changed in 2,022 years.

The Cure Is Worse Than the Disease

Climate change is a signature issue, but this is our first climate post since July 2021. This post updates our position about man-made warming. The big news is that we now conclude that climate activism will cause greater harm to humanity than climate change – and by a wide margin. Following is what the science tells us.

The earth is warming, and mankind exerts a warming influence.

Anything beyond the above sentence is not science; it’s that simple. The earth has been warming for 160 years. Although humans exert a warming influence, it is not possible to know how much warming is attributable to mankind. We believe anthropogenic causes are an inconsequential part of overall warming, but it is impossible to be sure. We also believe many anti-science myths that have gained currency are not true:

  • Hurricanes are not more frequent or severe than 100 years ago.
  • Floods have not increased over the past 70 years.
  • Greenland’s ice sheet is shrinking no more rapidly than 80 years ago.
  • Heat waves in the US are no more common than they were in 1900.
  • The amount of land burned each year by wildfires is less than 120 years ago.
  • Warming has many benefits; global greening has vastly improved agriculture.
  • Deaths from heat have increased, but there are 20 times less deaths from cold.
  • There is no increase in severe weather events compared to 100 years ago.
  • Climate change does not pose an existential threat to humanity.
  • The Paris climate accord will have zero climate effect even if targets are met.
  • The recent climate legislation will lower temperature .0009 degrees by 2100.

It has become apparent that so-called solutions being proffered for climate change, a/k/a warming, will cause far more harm to humanity than the perceived problem. Following are some of the ways climate activists’ policies harm mankind.

Climate is a common global resource. It matters not what the US and western nations do if China, India, Africa and developing nations don’t join in. We are unilaterally squandering precious economic resources for a chimera. This is a classic “tragedy of the commons” scenario which we fail to grasp. There are 3.5 billion people without reliable sources of electricity. While climate alarmists consternate over a phony existential crisis 100 years from now, poor people face a real existential crisis today.

We are squandering trillions today on green pork to (maybe) achieve

infinitesimal reductions in temperature 100 years in the future. 

Even the middle class is forced to make tough economic tradeoffs due to skyrocketing energy prices. Costs surge, while economic growth declines. Emissions is increasingly an issue concerning only the elite. As demonstrated by the war in Ukraine, failure to produce energy in the west poses geopolitical risks, puts us at the mercy of dictators and heightens the risk of WMD use. Climate activists’ obsession with EVs makes us dependent on extractive minerals (lithium, cobalt) found mostly in unfriendly climes and mined by child and slave labor while wreaking grave environmental harm.

Climate monomania already causes energy nightmares. Reliable electric power no longer can be taken for granted. Green regulations, subsidies and mandates are causing shortages and driving up prices – by more than 100% in much of the US. Our living standards are endangered, while we are empowering Putin, Maduro and the ayatollahs.

The greatest damage is to western economies which are being savaged by wasteful spending on green energy in a quixotic attempt to cut emissions. Billions of people are being harmed today in pursuit of a wrongheaded and impossible dream. The trillions wasted on green pork come at the expense of food security, clean water, disease control, and electricity for billions of people. People in poverty in Africa do not need solar panels made with slave labor; they need food, water and health care now.

Last, to the limited extent warming is anthropogenic, it will be solved within 100 years via population decline, and without spending any money. Demographics is destiny.

Correlation is not Causation – Women’s Hemlines

The go-to argument for climate activists always is a graph showing temperature and CO2 rising in lockstep, with starting and ending points carefully selected for maximum impact. That’s all they have. If we could choose the starting and ending points, we could make the graph show anything. It is not reasonable that an established 160-year secular warming trend abruptly ended and was replaced by an identical anthropogenic warming trend. Correlation is not causation. We could replace the CO2 data on the graph with women’s hemlines to “prove” hemlines are the true cause of warming.

As Toynbee stated, “Civilizations die from suicide, not murder“. Climate activists are like Dr. Kevorkian, and western societies are his willing – make that eager – victims.

This Thanksgiving, as your family gathers to celebrate, regale them with the indelible lessons of the first Thanksgiving in America and not with the usual feel-good, warm, fuzzy, multi-cultural and politically correct narrative of Pilgrims sharing their first harvest and peacefully celebrating with their Wampanoag neighbors. This fusty canard about Thanksgiving is mostly false and offers no enduring life lessons.

The Pilgrims did not invite the Indians to the first Thanksgiving 

The Wampanoags were not invited to the harvest feast but crashed the party after it had begun, not to celebrate but to remind the Pilgrims they were there at their mercy. The relationship turned violent soon thereafter. Native Americans regard Thanksgiving as a tragedy leading to genocide, loss of land and slavery. Americans have been taught a story that is historically incorrect and that ignores the true lessons of Thanksgiving.

The True and Enduring Lessons of Thanksgiving

Following is the authentic story of Thanksgiving in America and its timeless lessons about human nature that speak to us even today. It is an inspiring and uplifting story about human survival, adaptation and eventual triumph over starvation and death.

Once upon a time, good and righteous people seeking a better life came to settle in America; they had sincere and lofty ideas about how they would govern themselves in the new world. They believed that sharing all work and benefits equally was just and even noble. They strove gallantly to make such a socialist system work.

The Pilgrims starved under socialism but prospered with capitalism

But after enduring social dissonance and unfathomable hardships, they came to the realization that a system of communal property is incompatible with human nature. They quickly took decisive action and instituted private property rights. The next harvest resulted in a veritable cornucopia, and they held a feast to celebrate. Today, we celebrate this triumph of freedom over socialism as the first Thanksgiving in America.

The authentic Thanksgiving narrative is about early Americans overcoming starvation, death and collectivism. It is about understanding that socialism always results in starvation amidst plenty. It is about understanding that severing the link between work and benefit is contrary to human nature. It is about understanding that socialism is such a perversion that people choose starvation over living and working communally.

People in Plymouth (and Jamestown) literally chose death over socialism. Yet, all these same people who, one year earlier, starved under socialism suddenly became industrious, inventive and prosperous when they had property rights. And that, dear readers, is the authentic narrative of the first Thanksgiving in America!

This post destroys the final school choice myth, i.e. that public schools are necessary. We advocate universal school choice with the money following the child. Up to now, we assumed choice would force public schools to become competitive. We now conclude government schools are a destructive force incapable of significant reform and should be abolished. First, we recap other myths propagated by teachers’ unions.

  • Choice drains money: Vouchers always are for less (usually far less) than per pupil spending in public schools. Hence, vouchers increase spending per public student.
  • Some children are left behind: This is analogous to asserting that because there are not enough lifeboats for everyone, then no one should be saved.
  • Choice Balkanizes education: Students already are highly stratified by income and race. School choice, rather than compulsion, does much more to bridge divides.
  • Segregation would increase: Public schools already are highly segregated based on where people live. Voluntary integration under choice is better than forced integration.
  • The rich benefit under choice: The wealthy already have choice based largely on where they choose to live. The poorest among us need choice the most.
  • Poor families make bad choices: Not only is this insulting to low-income families, but empirical evidence from existing voucher programs dispels this myth.
  • Voucher schools are unaccountable: Private schools are immediately and directly answerable to parents, government schools only indirectly to school boards elected every four years. There is no force more powerful than parents armed with a voucher.
  • Voucher schools are unregulated: Regulating private schools would turn them into the monstrosities families are desperately escaping. Parents are the best regulators.

 

The Case for Abolishing Government Schools

Abolishing public schools will reduce school shootings. As gun free zones, public schools are easy targets. They create hordes of disgruntled and disaffected students who are held there involuntarily; it is not shocking some of them turn to mass violence. With school choice, parents could select schools that provide strong security. No child would be there involuntarily, and troublemakers could be summarily expelled.

Because private schools are non-union and have few administrators, they cost roughly half that of government schools. The county where I live (Seminole) has 60,000 students and 125 administrators making $100,000 per year plus many more making less. In sharp contrast, the Catholic Diocese of Orlando has 15,000 students and only 3 administrators. Eliminating unions and unneeded administrators not only saves money, but it does away with all the mindless bureaucracy that stifles learning.

Abolishing public schools would result in better schools at half the cost

Schools should adapt to the needs and capacities of its students. For less capable students, public schools impede learning, while for bright students the incredible slow pace is a form of torture as they sit year after year in an inescapable miasma. Every student needs a school at his/her level taught by teachers at the same level.

Then there is the issue of values. Families should be able to have their children attend schools that reinforce, rather than contradict, parental values. Parents should not have children taught CRT, the 1619 Project and gender dysphoria without their consent. They needlessly scare the bejesus out of kids about the environment and climate change. Public schools take in carefree, joyous and eager children living in the most well-off, healthy and multicultural society ever known and indoctrinate them to believe they actually inhabit a horribly oppressive country of which they should be ashamed.

That public schools are necessary for maintaining American democracy is a canard that no longer exists and is actually perverse. Eons ago, it might have been possible for a laborer’s daughter to marry the banker’s son, but today there is no way they would attend the same school. Data show private schools produce superior civic outcomes. Public schools do not foster unity from diversity; they exacerbate diversity.

Government schools are a jobs program for adults; children be damned. They resemble public housing; only people with no other choice go there. Public schools, teachers’ unions and the blob of administrators suck the sustenance out of our children. Government schools are a destructive force that can’t be significantly reformed and that cause far more harm than good. America will be much better off without them.

Fearless Forecast for the Election

Longtime readers know I have a lengthy record of getting elections right, not just the outcome, but the underlying electoral forces shaping the election. Recent subscribers to this blog may go to my website at www.mllg.us to view my bio, which includes nearly 60 years of political experience and observation at all levels of government.

Elections in Other Countries

I place significant weight on recent elections in other countries. Although the issues and candidates differ, there are enough similarities to make this a meaningful guide. The best example is Brexit. When the UK voted for Brexit in 2016, it foretold Hillary Clinton’s defeat. Voters in Northern England and the Midlands are no different than voters in Michigan and Wisconsin – they all want economic and cultural security.

The 2021 elections in Virginia and New Jersey also are portentous

Three recent elections are informative. In Sweden on September 11, a far-right party won big. On September 25, Giorgia Meloni and the far-right Brothers of Italy party scored a major triumph. These victories are the latest in a growing trend sweeping across Europe. Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, who polls had down 15 points, forced a runoff which he lost by only 1.8 percentage points. However, Bolsonaro’s right-wing party won control of both chambers of Congress. In these elections a common thread is a strong popular rejection of political elites and (except Italy) incredibly faulty polling.

Lies, Damned Lies, Statistics and Polls

Credible polling is dead. Part of its demise is due to uncontrollable trends such as cell phones, which make it impossible to obtain random samples. Then there is the reluctance of many people to respond to polls and the selective nature of those who do respond – liberals respond at a higher rate than conservatives. In recent years a new, and far more insidious, peril has arisen, i.e. pollsters have become woke.

All the electoral forces are aligning for a possible red wave

Most published polls are suppression polls, which skew the results to show liberal candidates far ahead. They believe this incentivizes liberal voters while suppressing conservative voters by conveying the notion they have no chance to win. They also hope such polls reduce the flow of money to conservative candidates.

Every poll missed Brexit and the 2019 UK Tory sweep by wide margins; same with Trump in 2016. In 2020 every poll showed Biden winning comfortably, dems widening their House majority and taking control of the Senate. In actuality, Biden squeaked by, the Dems lost 20 House seats and (before the Georgia runoff elections) did not control the Senate. The poster child for polling wokeness was the Maine Senate race. Not one public poll in 2020 had Susan Collins ahead; many polls showed her behind more than 10 points. Collins won by 9 points. The polls were off by a whopping 20 points.

Fearless Forecast for the Election

As this post is being written, three days before the election, all the electoral forces are aligning for a possible Republican sweep, i.e. a red wave. The only major unknown is if the GOP momentum will continue in the final few days. Late momentum is a potent electoral force. In 1968 Humphrey was surging in the final days prior to the election. If the election would have been held 3 days later, he would have defeated Nixon.

In the 19 midterm elections since 1946, the party out of power has won 95% of the time – all but once. Republicans will take firm control of the House of Representatives with a large majority. However, their potential 2022 gains will be reduced because they picked up 20 seats in 2020, thereby lowering their potential 2022 gains by that same amount. I expect the GOP to pick up 25 to 35 additional seats on November 8.

The Senate electoral calculus is daunting for Republicans as they must defend 22 seats to just 12 for the Democrats. (In 2024 the Dems must defend 23 seats to only 10 for the GOP.) Nonetheless, the GOP will also take control of the Senate. If polls show a GOP candidate down by 5 points or less, you should assume the election is a tossup. If polls show the race even, the GOP candidate will win comfortably. In the end (after the expected runoff election in Georgia), I expect to see the Senate 52-48 GOP, but if the red wave materializes, I look for a GOP majority of 55-45 or even more.

In my home state of Florida, I can feel the pulse of the electorate much stronger and feel confident in my fearless forecast. Governor DeSantis will win by 10 points or more, while Senator Rubio will win decisively but by a smaller margin than DeSantis.

Tip for election night viewing: For an early indication of how the election is going, keep your eye on the New Hampshire Senate race where incumbent Democrat Maggie Hassan is facing Republican Don Bolduc. A Bolduc win augers well for the GOP. If Bolduc wins big, it likely means a red wave will sweep across America.

The true fascists in America today are found on the left. Biden, progressives, the media and just about everyone else has it backward. Mostly, this derives from an ignorance of fascism; therefore, we begin with the following dictionary definition of fascism.

“A political philosophy, movement or regime that exalts the state above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition.”

I’ll put it directly: Joe Biden, progressives, the Democratic Party and the media are the true fascists in America today. Don’t take my word for it; compare the dogma and actions of Biden and progressives to the definition of fascism above.

The progressive blob considers any beliefs but their own illegitimate, impermissible and a threat to democracy, even if held by 76 million ordinary Americans like Trump voters. Liberals threaten the institutions of our democracy by espousing court packing, ending the filibuster, packing the senate and abolishing the electoral college. They want to end competitive elections by nationalizing election laws and open borders.

They favor an all-powerful state and distrust the people, states and truth. They revel in the exercise of ersatz dictatorial emergency powers. They use the DOJ to criminalize mainstream Americans, like those attending school board meetings. They brook no dissent and use their control over social media to suppress, silence or even criminalize it. They lust for economic and social regimentation and control. They already have the answers to everything; hence, debate is not necessary. The ends justify the means.

They want total control over every American institution. They already assimilated, controlled or corrupted entertainment, social media, education, DOJ, science, sports, immigration, criminal justice, academia, corporations, fact-checkers, religion, election systems, politics, economics, military and social media. They are coming after the few they don’t yet control such as talk radio, Fox News and the Wall Street Journal.

Donald Trump and the MAGA movement are anti-fascist

I’ll be direct once again: Donald Trump, MAGA and conservatives are anti-fascists. They are for free people and free markets; they want to return power to the states and to the people. They place the individual above the state. They are for lower taxes, which reduces the power of government, and they oppose 87,00 new IRS agents. Again, with reference to the definition supra, Trump and MAGA are close to being the polar opposite of the definition of fascism, i.e. they are the anti-fascists.

Per Rush Limbaugh, liberals always are guilty of the things they accuse their opponents of doing and so it is with fascism. Joe Biden’s contempt for all who disagree was on lurid display in his Philadelphia speech. Bathed in a menacing red light and flanked by men brandishing guns, he vilified and cast his political opponents as devils.

Progressivism is A Maze of Contradictions

Liberals believe the darndest things including obvious and preposterous contradictions. They champion anti-American Palestinians, governed by dictators, who pay bounties to families of suicide bombers, throw gays off tall buildings and treat women as chattel. They demonize Israel, a pro-American democracy, that goes to great lengths to avoid civilian casualties and respects and protects the rights of women and gays.

Their mantra is “follow the science” but ignore it when it doesn’t support their dogma regarding GMOs, vaccines, fracking, organic food, and pesticides. They believe it is okay for millions of illegal immigrants to be unvaccinated, but Djokovic cannot play in the US Open and young children must wear masks even when playing outdoors. They are for less emissions but oppose natural gas and nuclear, the best ways to cut CO2.

Liberals oppose photo IDs for voting but are fine with requiring them for air or train travel, TSA, hotels, passports, renting a car, buying a gun, getting a mortgage, hunting or fishing license, job, unemployment, Medicaid, welfare, food stamps, bank or brokerage accounts, cell phones, buying alcohol or tobacco, taking the SAT, giving blood, adopting a pet and for admission to the Democratic National Convention.

Liberals are passionate about a woman’s right to choose but oppose her right to choose where to school her kids, to buy a gun, to get vaccinated or to join a labor union. They claim their bodies are sacrosanct while demanding coerced vaccinations. They believe a young girl can have an abortion or undergo gender transition without parental notification or consent but can’t get a tattoo. In what has to be the most preposterous contradiction of them all, progressives believe in abortion for gender selection – in which 99% of aborted fetuses are female. In other words, progressives believe females should be aborted in order to protect their rights when they are women.

They call Republican claims of election fraud insurrection while asserting Stacey Abrams is governor of Georgia – despite losing by 50,000 votes. They are feminists but are okay with trans women (biological males) destroying girls’ sports. They believe Sweden and Nordic nations are socialist, but they are capitalist with taxes less progressive than in the US, where the bottom 60% pay no income tax net of credits.

Progressives want to tax the rich but protect carried interest, which benefits only private equity and hedge fund tycoons. They want unlimited SALT deductions that benefit only the top 3%. Instead, they raise corporate taxes, of which 98% are passed on as higher prices to working Americans. They unleash 87,000 new IRS auditors to suck out the sustenance of small business owners. They believe corporate money in politics is evil but megabucks from labor unions is peachy keen. They believe MSNBC is mainstream, but Fox News is extreme. They applaud the FBI for going after the Trump family but not Hunter Biden and the Biden family’s corrupt dealings.

Liberals beg dictators in Russia, Iran and Venezuela to produce more dirty energy, thus enriching our enemies and despoiling the environment, while doing everything possible to cripple clean energy production and distribution in the US and Canada. They rail against child labor in third world countries that produce goods for Walmart but are silent about child and slave labor working in deplorable conditions in the mines of Zambia, Congo and China that produce lithium and cobalt for EVs driven by elites.

Progressives consider abortion a constitutional right although it is not mentioned anywhere in that document nor is it deeply embedded in tradition. But they believe the right to keep and to bear arms is unconstitutional although it is explicitly stated in the Constitution and deeply rooted in American history and tradition. They believe labor unions are beneficial even though 94% of private sector workers reject them.

They believe America is racist despite a two-term black president, a sitting black vice president and political control of most major cities. In a recent survey, those who identified themselves as “very liberal” believed 10,000 unarmed blacks were killed by police last year. Those who identified as “liberal” put the death toll at 1,000 unarmed blacks killed by police. The actual number last year was six. They believe 50 million abortions since 1973 are just fine but that 1,500 legal executions are evil. They believe in open borders today but condemn them when Europeans migrated to America.

How is it possible for anyone with an IQ in triple digits to believe so many obviously and preposterously contradictory things? To be a progressive in America you must believe all the absurd incongruities enumerated in this posting. But no worries, life in the progressive hive is very easy. There is no identity but that derived from the hive; there are no values but hive values and there are no thoughts but hive thoughts.

To believe America was founded on slavery requires historical ignorance of the first magnitude. America was founded on ideals: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights.” America was and remains a beacon of liberty to the rest of the world. Millions of immigrants spent their life’s savings and risked death to come here. The 1619 project indoctrinates our children that America’s history is nothing but a phantasmagoria of horrors for which we must be shameful and pay reparations.

We do not want to sanitize history. Slavery existed in America, and it is condemnable. It is proper for schools to teach the history and evils of slavery. The problem is lack of context. We need to understand America the same way we regard flawed, even deeply flawed, people who nonetheless accomplish great things and are worthy of our admiration, even love, despite their flaws. What makes America unique is not slavery; it’s emancipation and how quickly we went from slavery to a black president.

Can anyone imagine South Africa electing a white president?

Aside from its predicate being totally wrong, the 1619 Project is chock full of flaws. It is based on the work of Nikole Hannah-Jones, a New York Times reporter without any academic credentials. Her work is disputed by serious historians who have studied slavery in America. Following are some of the major errors in the 1619 Project.

Slavery was at the center of America’s founding. Slavery is as old as recorded history and still exists today in Ghana, Nigeria, Mauritania, South Sudan and in scores of other countries. The United Nations estimates there are 50 million slaves today, including forced labor, forced marriage and human trafficking. As noted supra, America’s founding was based on the ideals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

America prospered due to slavery. Although individual slave owners may have benefitted, the nation as a whole did not. Many black Americans who could afford them also owned slaves. The parts of America with slavery were the poorest parts.

The 1619 Project’s Four “R”s: Reading, ‘Riting, ‘Rithmatic and Race

Slavery created economic prosperity. Brazil imported more slaves than the US and it was concentrated in the poorest regions. The same pattern happened in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, throughout the Caribbean and, of course, in America.

Black Americans fought alone. Quakers and other abolitionists in the eighteenth century were instrumental in the fight against slavery as was the Republican Party in the nineteenth century. In the twentieth century, the NAACP was cofounded by blacks and whites and the civil rights movement included many whites, Jews and Catholics.

All racial inequality today is attributable to slavery. Everything is blamed on slavery: poor academic performance, worse jobs, lower incomes, more incarceration, etc. Culture and personal responsibility are rejected as contributing to these problems.

The slave trade was mostly American. Five million more slaves were sent east to the Ottoman Empire than were sent to the Americas. Most slaves were sold by other Africans, even by their own families – making them complicit; the slave trade could not have existed without the support of African elites. There are no descendants of the slaves sent east because they all were castrated and then killed when their usefulness ended. Over one million Europeans were enslaved by Barbary pirates.

The 1619 project is the product of junk journalism; it is not serious academic work. Its premise is fatally flawed as are all its underpinnings. Every historian knows this, but most remain silent to avoid being called racist and jeopardizing their careers. Worst of all, it teaches our children that America’s past is nothing but a parade of horrors.

America remains that shining city on a hill. It is like a priceless jewel whose setting becomes tarnished from time to time – but the jewel itself is unaffected.
